Street and Block Voices
I have been a resident at Adams Elm House in Leigh for about 7years and been actively involved in South Essex Homes since 2006. I am involved in various focus groups such as Sheltered Housing and Estate Services, I am also the resident Coordinator for Adams Elm when we are having any decent Homes work done I go along to the meetings and ensure the residents are keep informed at all times.
I attend the Tenants Voice Association which I find extremely useful as you meet other resident representatives around the borough and find out what they are doing in their community.
Since becoming more involved, as a community we hold many social activities within our communal lounge including events to raise money for the ‘Help the Heroes’ and bingo nights where I have been asked to be the bingo caller. Since being in my role as a Block Voice for Adams Elm House we have been successful in getting a project approved for our communal garden, we had a lovely patio area built where we all enjoy a cuppa and a chat in the sunshine.
Since 1978 I have been actively involved in the Southend Carnival which I thoroughly enjoy as I get to meet some lovely people. I also attend the Older People Assembly meeting which was set up in 2007. The meetings are very interesting as it gives all residents over the age of 55 that live in the Southend Borough to raise any local concerns or issues. Link to older people assembly
I love being involved with South Essex Homes as I feel I am making a difference along with other residents and officers. I would recommend all residents to be involved or have an active role as this will only improve the services that South Essex Homes provide.the services offered.
We have been your street voices since 2002. We have met many of you, but none of our new residents. Please remember we are here for you if you have a problem or just want to chat.
John and I work hard for you all behind the scenes, making sure our services are the best they can be.

My name is Norman Burn and I am the Block Voice for Sherwood Way Part 1 Sheltered Scheme. I sit on a number of Focus Groups including Estate Services, Communication, Sheltered Housing and Standard Leadership Group looking after the interest of my local tenants and all of the borough wide residents. I was involved in the early stages when South Essex Homes was first formed and over the years held many positions helping all of our tenants.
In my role I arrange regular residents meetings to discuss matters which affect our community inviting members of the Police and Officers of South Essex Homes to update on issues such as decent homes works, crime reports etc.
I’ve been a tenant for 48 years and actively involved since 1999. I started to get more involved when I lived at Pennine flats in Southend and we were experiencing a lot of anti social behaviour and residents felt the need to change the image of the estate. ASB was reduced by residents working in partnership with the Council and the Police Service and the general community improved.
Since moving to Yantlet in 2005 we have submitted 2 Resident Led Projects and have been successful in both. One of the projects was for garden furniture. Friendships have been developed as residents are now able to meet in the communal garden. The other project was to install fencing around the front of the block. This has made residents feel more secure as non residents are no longer able to walk across the front garden.
However, our greatest improvement is the installation of six scooter sheds. This was successful by working in partnership with our Neighbourhood Services Officer.
I would encourage all residents to participate more as this will ensure that we improve our relationship with South Essex Homes and the services offered.
